Who We Are
The SheSTEM Ghana Initiative is a national project under the Young Diplomats of Ghana (YDG), with support from the International Perspective for Policy & Governance (IPPG), dedicated to empowering young girls to pursue and sustain careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The initiative was established as part of IPPG’s ongoing research and advocacy efforts on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality).
SheSTEM Ghana addresses persistent challenges such as gender stereotypes, cultural biases, limited access to mentorship, lack of female role models, and inadequate awareness about career prospects in STEM. These barriers often contribute to the steep drop-off in female participation from secondary school through tertiary education and into professional STEM careers.
Through a blend of research, advocacy, mentorship, and practical engagement, SheSTEM Ghana has become a national platform for advancing gender equality in STEM driving Ghana’s progress toward inclusive education, equitable opportunities, and sustainable development under the SDGs. Each year, the initiative will be led by the SDGs 4 and 5 Project Group of YDG delegates as part of their YDG training, with each team building upon the achievements of the previous group to ensure the program’s continuity, visibility, and long-term impact across Ghana.
Our Mission
To empower and inspire young Ghanaian girls to pursue and sustain careers in STEM by addressing systemic barriers, promoting mentorship, and providing access to education, resources, and career opportunities that foster gender equality and inclusive participation in STEM.
Our Vision
A Ghana where every girl has equal access to quality STEM education, mentorship, and professional opportunities to create a generation of women who drive scientific and technological innovation, invention, research, and sustainable development
